The application must be completed and signed by the J-2 dependent requesting work authorization after arrival to the U.S.

A complete application will include:

1. Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. Type or print legibly in black ink. The eligibility category for #27 is (c)(5).
2. Two 2x2 passport-style photos: Using a pencil or felt pen, lightly print your name on the back of the photo.
3. Bank check, money order, or personal check from a U.S. bank in the amount of $410.00 USD made payable to U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
4. A signed statement affirming income from your earnings will not be used to support the principle J-1. You can utilize this sample letter.
5. Photocopy of passport photo/information pages with expiration date of both the J-1 and J-2.
6. Photocopy of J-1 and J-2 visas.
7. Photocopy of J-1 and J-2 Form DS-2019s.
8. Photocopy of J-1 and J-2 I-94 Arrival Page showing the latest arrival information available on the CBP website.
9. If applicable, a photocopy of a current and/or previous Employment Authorization Document (EAD).     
10. Optional - Form G-1445, E-Notification of Application/Petition Acceptance to receive an e-mail or text message that USCIS has received your application. Not available for residents of New Jersey.                                                                       

It is recommended that you mail your application to the USCIS by express mail/courier service that will confirm delivery. Please visit the USCIS Filing Addresses page for instructions regarding where to mail your application.

Processing time may be up to or beyond 90 days. You can view the processing times on the USCIS website. Confirmation that your application has been received by USCIS, along with the receipt number, will be sent to the mailing address you provided on the I-765 form. You may use the confirmation number to view and check the progress of your application on the USCIS website.

You cannot begin employment until after you have received your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from USCIS. The EAD is an identification card laminated in plastic, with your photograph and the period of time you have been given employment authorization. Your employer will ask you to complete a Form I-9 and to present proof of identity and employment authorization. 

You may work part-time or full-time and do not need to have a job to apply for J-2 employment authorization. 

You can apply for a Social Security Number jointly with the I-765 application or, once you have received the EAD, you can apply for a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) at a local Social Security Administration office.
