All J-1 students that have academic training (AT) available to them are encouraged to use their academic training to begin their appointment at Princeton. J-1 Academic Training (AT)
- 1. COMMON APPOINTMENTS
J-1 academic training may be used for the following appointments: Assistant Professor, Instructor, Lecturer, Associate Research Scholar, Postdoctoral Research Associate, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Visiting Postdoctoral Research Associate, and Associate Professional Specialist.
- 2. TIME LIMITS AND ELIGIBILITY
AT is granted to doctoral students for up to 36 months in 18 month installments. Bachelor’s and Master’s degree students may be granted AT for up to 18 months total. A graduating student should apply for AT and any extensions through the international student advising office with their F-1 school sponsor.
- 3. MAINTAINING STATUS
Appointees in J-1 status authorized for Academic Training (AT) remain under the J-1 sponsorship of the school that they attended. For immigration advice, they should consult the international office at their university.
In general, those authorized for AT are required to report to their university:
- Home address
- Employer’s name
- Employer’s address
- 4. DEPENDENTS
Spouses and unmarried children up to the age of 21 qualify for dependent status of a J-1 exchange visitor. Dependents carry J-2 status.
Dependents cannot automatically work but are eligible to apply to the United States Citizenship & Immigration Service for J-2 Work Authorization.
- 5. TRAVEL WHILE ON J-1 AT
Travel while on Academic Training requires that the DS-2019 be endorsed for travel authorization. Contact the international office at your school to confirm any requirements and obtain a signature for travel. You should also carry documentation of your employment. A letter of employment may be obtained from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty or Human Resources.
